Different Culture, Same Christ

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” -Philippians 2:1-2
Today marks exactly one week that I have been in Salamanca, Spain, for a semester study abroad program. Even though I have loved the Spanish language for some time, life can be very different, and even confusing at first. Especially when you want to effectively cross cultural boundaries and make meaningful connections with people in their native social, cultural, and idiomatic language.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve already had plenty of social faux paxs and comical language misunderstandings. But all of these experiences make me more aware of the beauty and significance of the fellowship we have in Christ as believers. A fellowship which transcends social misinterpretations and can cross into any culture. So, if you’re reading this, I ask you, “If you were to leave everything your current culture entails, all the social rituals and habits, would you be able to connect with your brothers and sisters in Christ around the globe? Do you pursue unity with Christ and in Christ?” It’s a simple message, but one I think we ought to contemplate as a body. Because when our culture is no longer there to support or comfort us, we tend to cling to the one Truth, He being Christ.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
