Matthew 14:22-32
New International Version (NIV)

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said,“why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

This story is a great example of not only faith, but also what happens to us when we lose our faith, even if it is just for a moment.

In Matthew 14:22-32, we are told of the story of Jesus walking on the water. Thinking it was a ghost, they were scared. Jesus promptly reassured them saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Since they were not completely convinced, Peter asked the person walking on the water to allow him to walk out to him on the water. This would prove to him that it was Jesus. After Jesus told him to come, Peter climbed out of the safety of the boat having faith in Jesus that he would not sink. Walking out toward Jesus, Peter saw the storm raging around him, and was afraid. Because of his fear, Peter momentarily lost his faith in Jesus, which meant he could not stay walking on the water. After saving him, Jesus climbed into the boat and the storm stopped.

This story shows us how much faith can do. Because of his faith in Jesus, Peter was able to walk on water! After losing his faith due to fear, however, Peter was no longer able to stand on top of the water. It is the same in our day to day walk. When we put our faith, our hope, our trust in Jesus Christ, we can do anything. With Christ, there are no limits to the things we can accomplish. The moment we lose faith, however, we will fall. But the good news is, even after we fall, Jesus is there to pick us back up!

Stay strong in your walk with God, always praying, so when the time for temptation comes, you will be able to resist Satan. Never forget that you are a child of God, and as soon as you put Jesus as your commander in battle, you will not lose. If Jesus is not leading a battle, however, then we are in danger of falling to the enemy. Stay strong in your faith.
