You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. (Matthew 5:13).
Salt is a mineral that is formed through a natural process within the Earth. It is essential to human survival. Salt is a vital to necessary function ranging from the formation of clouds, regulation of the fluid balance in the body, and the preservation of food. There is no mistaking the importance of salt in the everyday lives of humans.
Likewise, the body of Christ is essential to the survival of humanity. Just as salt comes in different forms and serves different purposes, so is the body of Christ of one body with many members and with different functions. “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…” (Romans 12:4-6).
It is our responsibility to be dutiful as the body of Christ and to stand out in the world as having certain characteristics or dominant qualities such as love, joy, peace, patience (longsuffering), kindness (meekness), goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and temperance. The way this is achieved is through our relationship with Christ. This is the only way we can be made fit by our experiences in order that we may engagingly provoke the rest of humanity to their won relationship with Christ. Those who willingly do not desire and seek after this relationship expose themselves to contemptuous and ruthless destruction at the hands of men. “And the destruction of the transgressor and of the sinner shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed” (Isaiah 1:28).
It is our responsibility to have such an effect on the world that it will drastically be changed. We as the body of Christ are to be the city on the hill that cannot be hid. We are also to be the light for all to see by. What we do should bring glory to our Father in heaven. We are to be the examples that make the rest of the world desire to taste and see how good the Lord our God is.
