What A Christian Should Look Like Part II

Part I | Part III

Galatians 5:16-26
New International Version (NIV)

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Above ,found in verses 19-21, are examples of the works of the flesh (the works of the flesh are sinful, being against God). Here is a list of examples:

  • sexual immorality
  • impurity
  • debauchery
  • idolatry
  • witchcraft
  • hatred
  • discord
  • jealousy
  • fits of rage
  • selfish ambition
  • dissensions
  • factions
  • envy
  • drunkenness
  • orgies
  • Things like these…

The Bible, God’s Holy Word, states we are a new creation when we are saved by Christ Jesus. This means we are no longer slaves to our sin (works of the flesh). God can and will deliver you from addictions you have, because He loves you. We have done nothing to deserve His love but He shows it to us anyways. Once saved, you will no longer have the works of the flesh visible in your life. Yes, everybody messes up and sins, but we no longer have to try to hide it. We can seek forgiveness from Jesus Christ and be as clean as snow. Instead of the works of the flesh, Christians will produce the fruits of the spirit (found in verses 22-23). These are:

  • Love (unconditional love, not worldly love)
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faith
  • Gentleness
  • Self-control

As Christians, we should see all of these things in our lives. You cannot have one and not the rest. If you are walking with the Holy Spirit every day, then you will produce the fruits of the spirit. There is nothing we can do to produce the fruits of the spirit but to walk in the spirit.
